It is located north of Crete, south of Naxos and Paros. The largest island has the same name, Santorini or Thira. In the archipelago are the islands of Thira, Thirasia, Aspronisi, Paléa Kaméni, Néa Kaméni and Christiani at more than 20 km. The shape of the archipelago was created by the Minoan eruption, a huge eruption of the volcano that stood before it. The capital is called Thira.
Santorini was the cradle of the Cycladic civilization. In Akrotiri you can still see the remains of the high architecture from the Minoan period. The island remained after the volcanic eruption around 1600 BC. uninhabited for centuries. Only from the eighth century BC. people lived there permanently again, after Dorian settlers from Sparta settled there under the leadership of Theras. At a strategic location on Mount Mesa Vouno, they founded the city-state of Thera, which became the administrative center of the island. Thera sided with Sparta in the Peloponnesian War (431-404 BC), but came under Athenian rule. It became a port of Egypt in the Ptolemaic Empire and then fell successively to the Romans, the Byzantines and in 1204 to the Venetians, who named the island Santorini after Irene of Thessaloniki. Venice made it part of the Duchy of Naxos. The Turks occupied it from 1579 to 1832, but since then the Cyclades are Greek again. The 1956 earthquake caused great destruction. Many residents again left Santorini, but they gradually returned over the following decades. People from other parts of Greece and other, mainly European, countries also settled there. Due to the increase in tourism, the population has grown strongly since then.
